The 3Rs of animal research

The “3Rs alternatives” refers to the replacement, reduction, and refinement of animals used in research, teaching, testing, and exhibition. Drs. William Russell and Rex Burch first described the 3Rs in 1959 in their book, “The Principles of Humane Experimental Technique”. They have since been updated in line with common scientific parlance to highlight the importance to modern research.

SenSV directly helps with Refinement: use of methods that alleviate or minimize potential pain, suffering or distress, and enhance animal welfare for the animals used. By identifying vibration, audible sound, and ultrasonic sound, action can be taken to remediate the problem and lessen the stress on laboratory animals. This is a global effort as outlined by this organization, NC 3Rs
